A Drywall Popcorn Ceiling

Did you know that you can have a drywall popcorn ceiling over your old popcorn ceiling. Old popcorn ceilings makes the room look like an outdated  piece that is screaming to be scraped off.  Popcorn ceilings were famous before 1978 now they are not only considered as old-fashioned but they often contain asbestos which is very tricky to remove. In such a situation one often wonders of a solution. The solution that we have for you is to get a new drywall popcorn ceiling. Drywall popcorn ceiling is a new ceiling that you can install right over the already existing popcorn ceiling. You must be wondering is drywall popcorn ceiling really impossible? It surely does sound like a tough task but with proper tools and allot of hard work drywall popcorn ceiling wont be so tough.

If you have decided to get rid of drywall removing popcorn ceiling then some of the things that you will be needing are 3/8" or 1/2" sheet rock, stud finder, utility knife, drywall jack,  drywall tape, mud pan, dry wall knives of six inch, drywall mesh sanding pads, drywall screws  and screw gun, Joint compound, pole sanderm and most importantly ladder.

Step1:
With the help of a stud finder locate the ceiling joists and make marks on the wall with a pencil. The marks will be your guide in lining the sheet rock and sticking it to the ceiling.

Step2:
Make sure the sheet rock you buy is in thin pieces as  it will adjust well to the existing drywall and will not add allot of weight to the entire ceiling.  You cannot install the sheet rock all on your own, you will be either needing help from somebody to hold the sheet rock while you install them or if you have nobody to assist you then you can rent a drywall jack from any of the rental yard. Drywall jack is a hydraulic lift that lifts and holds the sheet rock firmly in to the place the entire time you install it. While your hanging the sheets make sure you do not but all the four corners together as later it will result into a crack due to a weak joint.

Step3:
For installation of the sheet rocks make use of the drywall screws rather than the nails. They will hold the sheets together strongly and also lessen the chances of "nail pops" that often appear months after  the drywall popcorn ceiling is completed. Rather than hammering each screw into the sheet rocks if you use a drywall screw gun it will make your job ten times easier.

Step4:
Next you have to do is fill the mud pan with allot of joint compound also known as mud. Once the mixture is ready, with  the help of a six inch drywall knife apply a thick layer of it on  the first seam. Now take a piece of tape and press it on the seam firmly. Keep on removing the seam as you go along the way. It is better if you do one seam at a time so the mud doesn't start to come off before you tape the area. If you have somebody with you who is cutting the right amount of tape for you as you put the seam would make your job ten times easier.

Step5:
Once the entire wall is done, fold the tape and apply mud on both the ends. It will take eight hours for the wall to dry and if the weather is humid it can take up to 24 hours.

Step6:
Once the mud is dry take the six inch knife and remove all the extra dried lumps making the entire ceiling smooth. Now repeat the same procedure of applying mud on the ceiling only this time use ten inch ceiling. This time apply thinner coats of mud to get the job done as quickly as possible.  Since this coat is thinner it will take four to six hours to dry.

Step7:
Once this is coating is dry, you can sand the drywall ceiling. The simplest method to drywall popcorn ceiling is with the help of a pole sander. Wear goggles while you sand the drywall popcorn ceiling to protect your eyes.
