Yup this is true, to remove the ceiling is not such a tough task as it is thought to be. It can slightly difficult for you if you have asbestos  in your popcorn ceiling. During the 70s asbestos was a very famous building and was used in nearly all the ceilings of that  time, so if your house was framed during the 70s or80s then it is likely to have allot of asbestos in its ceiling. Still to remove a ceiling having asbestos can be done easily just allot of patience is required while you complete the process. First wet little portions of the ceiling, wait for three minutes fo the water to set in, once you feel the ceiling has become pulpy scrape it away. But do not scrape the whole ceiling away because asbestos is dangerous for your health and you do not want to inhale it in. It is best if you zip the scraped material in a lock bag and then take it to the local laboratory so they can check it for you. If they say yes the ceiling does have asbestos in it, then removing a ceiling is not the task for you, in fact you should call the professionals to clean the ceiling. However  if the tests come clean then you can do the entire taking down the roof procedure yourself.

To remove the ceiling includes allot of mess. Since whatever you will be scraping off will be crashing down on the floor so it is a wise idea that you remove the entire furniture and collectibles from the room. Also spread two to three old bed sheets in the room, later when you are done with taking down the roof you can just wrap the bedsheets and clear them in the bin or simply throw them.

Once the issue of asbestos is, out of the way removing the ceiling material is straightforward; however, you should be prepared for a mess.
